The popular Pink Floyd song came out in 1979 with the chorus repeating:
We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
But, do we need really need education? Education is important, and countries with higher literacy rates, have been proven to have lower crime, corruption and poverty rates. Yet, education isn’t always executed correctly, whether it is the fault of the teachers, or the education system itself, education doesn’t always succeed. Although this is unrelated to our Cambridge/ IGSCE program being taught in Mexico, for example, in the United States, the country in which I was raised, our public education system is in rambles. In 1965, “integration” laws were passed to make schools less segregated, by the following year, only less than 1% of those schools was unsegregated. A statistic was taken in 2012 by the Southern Poverty Law and proved that public schools in the south of the U.S were equally and even less ethnically diverse than in 1968, the year when Martin Luther King Jr. (political and civil rights activist) was assassinated. Certain states in the U.S regulate what students learn and have the right to believe, which is not always the right thing to do. Whether it is restricting the use of local indigenous languages or imposing biblical teachings on students who may be of different faiths, those practices are discriminatory and wrong. For example, there are 37 states in the U.S that teach sexual abstinence, of those 37, there are 26 that STRESS the matter, and the state of Mississippi, one of those 26 states, has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country. Public education in the U.S needs to be dramatically ratified and modified. Yet, European countries and certain Asian countries have begun to create progressive and modern education systems or programs more fit for the 21st century. For example, Cambridge IGSCE program teaches tolerance and social and political engagement.
